About Lyricist Chris Breen
Chris Breen has been a songwriter for over 25 years, recently specialising more and more as a lyricist and top-line writer, collaborating with composers and musicians through a growing network of contacts, music industry adverts, and links through the Internet. Being a musician as well, he is able to naturally produce lyrics with strong rhythm and structure, helping the composer or melody-line writer to have an easier task in transforming lyrics into songs.
 |
Though many composers prefer to work that way, namely from lyrics being supplied first, Chris is happy to (and frequently does) work from CD or emailed MP3 backing tracks that a composer has sent, crafting lyrics to fit the accents, phrasing and inflexions exactly. Sometimes this is done to a detailed brief on the style or feeling wanted in the finished work, even specific songs or artists mentioned as guidance. Often however, composers are happy to give a totally free-reign in subject matter and viewpoint, allowing the feelings evoked from the music to trigger the creative flow.
Whatever way works best for you, really...

I'll always aim to come up with lyrics full of imagination and imagery, built around lyrical hooks and in 'a voice' that the singer can identify with. Maybe being a trained actor and Equity member has helped me successfully write for a very diverse range of artists. Recently I've written tracks for a 16-year-old female rock artist and a 50-something male country artist, both being recorded and soon to be released. I'm also currently writing lyrics and top-lines for dance tracks (including trance and house), and writing lyrics (and occasional music co-writes) in rock, indie, commercial and/pop, jazz, country and even musical/West End show styles.
Co-writing is truly international these days because of the Internet, broadband email and MP3 file sharing. Also with international song listings of artists and companies looking for specific material (see links), it means that the writers I am working with are not only UK based, but also living in the USA, Scandinavia, Switzerland, Germany and Eastern Europe too... and it's an ever growing list.

More about Chris & lyric writing projects...
-
Chris plays electric rhythm and acoustic guitar (some lead guitar occasionally), plays keyboards/synths, bass and programs drum parts from samples. He uses ProTools as a recording platform on Apple Mac, using predominantly Digidesign, Reason and Waves plug-ins for production and mastering.

-
If working to backing tracks and an existing melody-line from a composer, or writing top-lines to a dance backing track, Chris can demo record all the vocal parts after the lyrics have been written. Rough mixes or rushes can then be posted or emailed across as MP3s for the composer/co-writer to hear and then be passed on to the vocalist for the finished recording.

Chris has played guitar and been a vocalist in several rock and pop bands in the past, from pop-rock '80s' style guitar & synth bands to hard rock projects. He has also played in acoustic set-ups (acoustic guitar and vocals) and worked on purely studio-based, MIDI/synth recording projects.
